What Is The Best Time To Visit Crete Greece?
Today we are going to discuss seasons in Crete and answer the question, What is the best time to visit Crete Greece? The best time of the year to visit Crete, in my opinion, is the end of May to mid-June or towards the end of the tourist season which is mid-September to mid-October
It Really Depends On The Kind Of Activities You Have in Mind
Depending on the things you want to do, I think if you just want to visit Crete and Greece at large for a purpose of socking up the sun, then July and August is fine although it can get really hot during those months Crete can have temperature as high as 40 degrees Celsius that’s about 104 Fahrenheit so you really need to be very careful.
I will highly recommend that you invest in a good sunscreen, a hat and a pair of sunglasses because the sun in Crete is no joke, especially in August. And do not forget to drink lots of water, just plain water with ice, well I know the guys and some of the girls like downing the icy cold and refreshing Greek beer but make sure you drink some water too, it’s very good for you, trust me 🙂
The Reason Why I Think May-June Is The Best Time
I think Crete looks it’s best this time of the year because all the flowers are in full bloom and also the lemon and the orange trees are blossoming at this time of the year add a mix of herbs and you have a perfect scent that will put you in that holiday mood. So the air is filled with the most beautiful scent, and not only that. The temperatures are not so high at this time of the year, you can enjoy temperatures of 25 degrees Celsius which is about 77 Fahrenheit which I think is very good.
This time of the year is especially suitable for those who want to go sightseeing because it’s not too hot and also the places you want to go and see, will not be filled up with people so you can take your time and enjoy your visit whether you are visiting wineries, museums or hiking.
September is Also good because at this time things are usually cooling down, it’s not so crowded at the beaches and you can enjoy yourself by taking a swim in the sea which at this time of the year it’s nice and warm and you can particularly enjoy evening swims and watch the sunsets which are fabulous.
I actually think September would be the best time for a couple to have a romantic getaway in Greece, unlike August where it’s too hot to do anything, not to mention too crowded, September is just mild and the evenings are nice and cool, so you can have a stroll at the beach or sit at one of the beach tavernas and enjoy your favorite drink.
Are you Visiting Crete To Go Cycling?
Another reason to visit Crete during the cool months is that I have noticed that there are many people visiting Crete these days and going Cycling, I can confidently guarantee you that you won’t want to go cycling in August in 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit), it’s a very bad idea to do that.
And you definitely don’t want to go hiking the Samaria Gorge in August, I know that there are some tourists who go hiking in August but it’s very challenging, late April and early May would be the ideal time to take on the famous Samara.
So if you want to visit Crete and go cycling or go for other vigorous activities, then I think it’s a good idea to go when it’s not too hot and humid. In August, it can get so hot that the locals are forced to stay indoors with the air condition on, so I hope you get the picture.
Pocket-friendly Months
In the high of Tourist season, the flights and hotels are very costly, so if you would like a cost-friendly time then I would suggest April to mid May or Mid September to end of October, the weather at those times of the year is not so bad especially in September, the sea is still warm as I mentioned earlier.
In April however, the sea is cold (well at least for me it is) but we do get some really warm days in April so maybe you can take a deep in the sea and then come out and warm up at the beach, I have seen some people who go swimming in the sea in March and I say more power to them, in early April most big hotels are not open for the season yet but the bed and breakfast villas are open.
Although if you are visiting the big Cities, then of course you will find hotels that are open and you can book a room to stay and enjoy a nice and quiet vacation.
Conclusion
When you plan your visit to Crete or to the other Greek islands or even to the main land Greece, you need to ask yourself a few questions, for example what kinds of things do you want to do in Greece? based on the answers you get, then you can decide whether you want to go in August or you want to go in April.
Either way, you are going to have a good time I can promise you that, There are so many things to do in Greece and the island no matter what time of the year you chose to visit as long as you don’t visit in the middle of winter.
