Food Prices In Chania Crete, Fine Cuisine On A Budget?

In this article I want us to talk about restaurants in Chania Crete. Are the prices as delicious as the food? In some of the Greek Islands like Santorini And Mykonos, food prices can be outrageously high, I actually just watched a YouTube video where a traveler was shocked by the food prices in Santorini.

In My Opinion, Food Prices Are Lower In Crete In Comparison To Mykonos And Santorini

Crete is way cheaper than Santorini, and especially in Chania. for example, A glass of fresh-squeezed orange juice, will cost you 4 euros in a taverna at the hot tourist sport by the old harbor in Chania near the lighthouse, a glass of Juice in just a regular taverna in Santorini, will cost you 9.50 Euros.

In Chania at a restaurant in the old town, we had a meal for two, we had one Greek salad to share, one potion of musakaa, Grilled fish, bread and one glass of red wine, one glass of white wine and a bottle of water and the bill came to 30 euros, that’s not so bad for a meal for two. In Chania’s super tourist hot spot.

If you were to have the same meal in Santorini, you are looking at 50 or 60 euros.

Santorini Is Beautiful But I Think Its Not Ideal If You Are On A Small Budget

But to be fair I think you can find some restaurants in Chania that are high-end restaurants, where you have to pay anything from 100 to 150 euros for a meal for two. But usually, that will be a 3 or 4-course meal with drinks, of course, that will be an experience. But hey, there are people who prefer expensive dining.

To be honest, if you really want to experience the traditional Cretan cuisine, I suggest you visit the small tavernas. You will eat the real Cretan food, it will be delicious, prepared from recipes that are passed on from generation to generation, and it’s not expensive. Plus you will have an experience that you will talk about for a while 🙂

Another advantage of eating at the small village tavernas, the potions are quite large which means you can actually just share one meal between two people and a salad. And you will eat to your fill and probably have some leftovers. I mean when you are on holiday, it’s very easy to spend too much money and go over your holiday budget.

This Means You Need To Be Careful, And Make Sure You Stick To Your Holiday Budget.

In my opinion, Crete has low food prices when you compare it to other Greek Islands like as I mentioned earlier, Mykonos and Santorini. And to be honest, if you intend to have a long holiday in one of the Greek Islands Crete is the one that will give you value for your money. You definitely don’t want to spend 2 weeks in Santorini or Mykonos, if you are on a small budget.

So in my opinion, the food in Crete is delicious and the prices can be delicious too depending on where you choose to dine, the good thing is, even if you chose to dine at a small village teverna, it does not mean that the food will be low quality. On the contrary, the food could be even better, because it’s prepared fresh and in small bunches so the taste is amazing.

Plus the village tavernas use organic ingredients which they are actually growing in their gardens. Or if they don’t grow them, they will get them from the mini markets where the farmers bring their produce. Fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, potatoes, and other fruits and vegetables, so imagine all those fresh vegetables carefully prepared in olive oil and seasoned with fresh herbs growing wildly in the fields yummy!.

Anyway, let me give you an idea of prices, this is a menu card from a small taverna in Kalives beach called Mitsos, they make really good Gyros, it’s one of my favorite place to have Gyros In Kalives Beach.food prices in Chania Cretefood prices in Chania Crete

As you can see the glass of fresh orange juice is 2.50

one liter of house wine is 4 euros. And when it comes to salads, there is no salad that is more than 5 euros and Tzatziki is 2.50, if you are on a budget, you can enjoy your holiday in Crete and still enjoy the Cretan cuisine, without worrying so much about the food prices.

By the way, the potions are always large and two people can share one potion as I mentioned, and even the Gyros are very filling so if you order one for each and a salad, you will have more than enough.

If you find yourself in Kalives beach, I highly recommend having gyros in Mitsos or Souvlakerie, I have had gyros in both places and they are equally delicious.

You are probably wondering what makes these places the best Gyros places and why I am recommending them, well, I like Gyros a lot and every time we go for shopping in Chania, there is nothing better than to sit down and enjoy a nice Gyros and a cold drink especially during the hot months.

But some of our friends recommended Mitos and now we have made it a tradition to either go to Suvlakerie or Mistos for some gyros and good times with friends and we have found that the Gyros from those two places are absolutely amazing and I think it’s because they are always using fresh ingredients straight from the farmers.

Fresh tomatoes and fresh onions, and the yogurt they use it’s got an extra natural taste, I prefer my gyros to be made with yogurt instead of Tzatziki and I love how they make it for me.

I am still working on my post about the best places to eat in Kalives beach and it will be up soon, so keep an eye on that.

Conclusion

When on holiday, you want to enjoy yourself to the fullest, but you also want to stay on your budget so you will not be miserable when you get home. So, it’s wise to make sure that the places you are going to eat, are not overpriced. Vacationing in Crete, is a good experience and you will be able to enjoy the finest of Cretan cuisine without breaking the bank.

So my conclusion is, yes the prices in Crete are as delicious as the food 🙂 and the Island is beautiful and you will most definitely have a great time.

I would like to hear your views on this topic, have you visited other Greek Islands and do you think the food prices in Crete are lower, or do you think they are higher?

Thank you for your time

Rose.
