Tips On How To Save Money While On Vacation In Crete Greece
Today I would like to give you some tips on how to save money while on vacation in Crete Greece, when on vacation, if you are not careful, it’s very easy to run out of money and go ever your vacation budget so make sure that you stay within your budget, I am going to share with you ways that will help you enjoy your vacation without worrying about going over your vacation budget.
Hire A Car Or Use Bus Instead Of Using Taxi
The best way to see Crete is by hiring a car because there are many places you want to visit, it’s better to hire a car especially if you are traveling with family, taking a taxi every time you need to go somewhere can be very costly. So by hiring a car not only will it save you money, but it will also grant you the freedom to go and visit any place you wish to.
If you don’t want to hire a car, then I suggest you make use of the public transport whenever possible, there are buses, going to different destinations within Crete and you can take advantage of this mean of transportation. As I mentioned earlier, try as much as you can to minimize the use of taxi as much as you can, this will save you lots of money.
The other way to save money is finding out which places are near to where you are staying and just walk there, for example, if you are staying in Chania, there are many museums, and other things like the big market that are just within walking distance from each other and you can just visit those first and then plan to visit other sites that require transportation.
Saving Money While dining in Crete
Most tavernas especially the ones in small villages, their potions are very large and so it’s wise if you are traveling as a couple or as a family, you need to agree on the meal and as a couple just order one potion and share because the food is more than enough. If you order let’s say one portion of Chicken schnitzel, which will come with some potatoes, then you can order a portion of Greek salad, that will be more than enough for two people to share.
Always ask for a paketo
When you have eaten to your satisfaction and you have some leftovers that you think can be used the following day maybe to make a sandwich or something else, don’t let it go to waste, in Crete is very normal to ask for a paketo, which is the little package that they will make for you out of your leftovers to take home with you, just put aside the food you want to take home and then simply say to the waiter, paketo please.
The other tip that I can give you that will help you save money while you are vacationing in Crete, is if you are staying at bed and breakfast, and maybe you are staying for a long time like lets say 3 weeks, then I suggest you find the nearest supermarket and you do your shopping there things are cheaper in supermarket especially if you go to a Lidl supermarket, just do all your shopping there and you will save lots of money.
But for your fresh produce, always go to the nearest local mini market, they usually have fresh produce and most fruits and vegetables that you buy from the small local mini markets are organic and super fresh.
You Can Find Some Souvenirs in Local Supermarkets
If you happen to visit the local Supermarkets like Synka, you might be able to find some Cretan souvenirs, that will not be so expensive, you might find things like mugs with a map of Crete, or beer glass among other things, just keep an eye, and you will save some money because when you buy such things from a souvenir shop they will be higher priced than when you buy them from the Supermarket.
When Going To The Beach
If you are going to a beach that is far away from your hotel, it’s a good idea to prepare a small picnic basket, you will save a lot of money this way especially if you are traveling with children who get hungry very quickly, if you prepare some sandwiches and take some fresh fruits, and in summer there are many delicious, fresh fruits in Crete, like Cherries, strawberries, watermelons, peaches, apricots, and grapes just to name a few.
You can just have a family meeting with the children and agree that the only thing you are going to get at the beach is ice-cream, and maybe some drinks, but lunch and snacks you are going to take your own. I find if you inform the children about the plans of the day before you set off, they will not give you so much trouble(hopefully). Food and drinks at the tavernas that are by popular beaches can be quite expensive.
For example, a pint of beer in a small village away from tourist popular beach could cost you 3 euros but the same beer at the beach like let’s say, Agia Marina will cost you about 5 euros.
Conclusion
When traveling to Crete, if you know what you are doing you can save some money and have extra to buy more presents for your friends and family, and that’s why I have created this post to help you do just that. Just a simple act of ordering one portion of food and sharing other than wasting so much food, because things like a salad you really can’t take that in a paketo.
So when you order so much of that, you will pay for it and you will probably not be able to finish it all.
Anyway, I hope you have found this article helpful and I hope you will take measures to save some money while you are vacationing, I mean there is no reason for you to put yourself in debt or mess up your budget by spending extra money unnecessarily.
Thank you so much for your time
