Day Trips Crete To Santorini By Ferry

Let’s talk about day trips from Crete to Santorini by ferry, is it doable and how much does it cost to travel to Santorini from Crete. Santorini, is a very famous Greek island, and most people who travel to Crete, and Greece at large would like to go to Santorini even if it’s just for a day. The reason why Santorini is so famous it’s because of its beautiful sunsets, not to mention those Blue rooftops that look so good in pictures lol.

So are day trips Crete to Santorini possible? Most newlyweds would never dream of coming to Greece without going to Santorini, just for pictures and videos. For people who are planning a long holiday in the Greek islands, it makes more sense to visit the islands that are close to each other so you can see as many islands as possible.

Day Trips Crete To Santorini How To Go From Crete To Santorini By Ferry

The best idea would be to set base in Crete, and then visit Santorini, and Mykonos from there. Once you are in Santorini, you can also proceed to Mykonos From there which takes only two and a half hours by ferry. You can grab a ferry to Santorini, either from Heraklion or from Rethymno. There are two kinds of Ferries, you can either grab the Slow ferry (Olympus) which takes 4 hours from Rethymno, to Santorini and will cost you 35 Euros per person ($41.64) or you can take the high-speed ferry(CJets) which takes 2 hours to get to Santorini From Rethymno.

It will cost you 70 Euros ($83.31) per person to go with CJets, The ferries operate from the beginning of the season in April to September. Of course, next year (2021) depends on how things will go due to the current situation in the world.

Can I Get A Ferry To Santorini From Chania Crete?

No, you can only get a ferry either from Rethymno, or as I mentioned, from Heraklion. Of course, if you are in Athens, you can grab the ferry from the port of Piraeus in Athens.

Keep in mind that as the season nears the end, the ferries don’t operate daily from Rethymno, so if you are in this area, in September, you can only travel on Tuesdays, Thursdays, or Saturdays.

How To Prepare For Your Day Trip To Santorini

You must keep in mind that Santorini is quite expensive, and that is why people don’t really book long holidays, besides the island is quite small in comparison to Crete, so spending 2 weeks there is really a stretch, I mean unless you are honeymooners, who just want to sit around and stare into each other’s eyes all day lol.

And actually, even for honeymooners, Santorini is overrated, first of all, there is no privacy whatsoever, you could be chilling by the pool and then you see a photographer climbing the wall trying to capture the best shot of the sunset. Or you might find people watching you from across the streets or from the balcony opposite yours.

Also once you have taken pictures and seen the Blue rooftops, there won’t be much left for you to do once you have seen the island.

You Must Take Comfortable Shoes, A Hat And Lots Of Water

Anyway, to prepare for your trip, you need to have a good pair of shoes, because there will be lots of walking not to mention the steps that you have to climb to get to those famous spots where most models like to have their pictures taken. Speaking of photo spots in Santorini, Oia, is the most famous photo spot in Santorini.

The thing about this place is that although it’s the most famous photo spot, it’s not actually easy to get there so first you need to know that if you go there in the middle of summer, it’s super hot, crowded, and the road to get there is not easy, lots of climbing to do, and you also run a risk of getting lost.

You also need to know that once you get there, you will also find many people taking pictures. That’s why I always say, sometimes it’s better to visit such places off-season, then you can have the whole place to yourself, OK, maybe not to yourself but with fewer people around.

Remember to carry water and some snacks, sunglasses, and a hat.

Day Trips Crete To Santorini Is One Day Enough To See Santorini?

Well, it really depends on your interest. Some people say you need at least 2 days to see Santorini, but yet others say you just need a day. It really depends on you and your budget, as I said Santorini is very expensive, food is expensive, hotels are expensive, so you just need to decide based on how much time and money you want to spend in Santorini.

If you are going on an organized trip, where you get tour guides, then, of course, they will take you to the places you need to go, And maybe you will get to see more places than you would on your own because the tour guides know the places to take you and they know how to get there. Of Course, it will cost you good money, Before the end of the season this year, the trip was costing 165 Euros per person.

Conclusion

Making a trip to Santorini from Crete is a great idea, and it’s doable, we have many friends who have done day trips Crete to Santorini, mainly us locals who live on Crete. But even for tourists, it’s possible to do a day trip from Crete to Santorini, or even from Crete to Mykonos.
